Hello Ruby Rock-it Fans!  Erin here with you today, with our segment on Why.We.Scrap.  For many of us, we started after having our babies, wanting to keep their memories in a keepsake album, not wanting to forget milestones, birthdays, graduations, and all the in betweens!  As I've fallen in love with this hobby, playing with paper and glue has become a way of life for me, as well.

The following project and card were a result of just that:  the LOVE of playing with paper and glue.  Simple as that!

 

 

One of my very favorite ranges from this past release is our Oriental Chic range.  The patterns are just gorgeous, and I love the sweet color palette and the embellishments!  Let's take a moment to appreciate all these beauties!  Our dimensional stickers are just amazing...and I've added them here, they are the perfect accents for this altered tin gift box!

Tuesday Tutorial | Paper Pleating with Monique

 

 

 

 

Hi Ruby Rock-It fans! It's Monique today with a tutorial "from the past" for you. When I was in primary school (a very long time ago) I learned how to paper weave and how I created little woven table cloths for my mother and grandmothers. I had totally forgotten about this fun technique until I recently saw it again somewhere on the world wide web. 

 

I remember how much fun I had weaving strips of papers and decided to use this technique for today's tutorial. With Father's Day around the corner, I thought to edit the idea of the table cloth a bit and create a paper pleated (heart) gift bag for my dad. 

 

Let me show you what I made for my father, using Ruby Rock-It Bella!'s "Father" mini collection: 

 

 

 

And here's how you do it: 

 

1. Cut 2 strips of paper measuring 3" x 9": 

 

 

2. Fold them in half so they measure 3" x 4.5" and cut the open end of the strips you just folded half round. I used a frame from Technique Tuesday to draw a half circle with a pencil, before cutting it. 

 

 

3. Now, they should look like this: 

 

 

4. Next, use a pencil and draw 2 lines, dividing both the yellow and dotted folded strip in three 1" strips and hand cut them like this (start the cuts on the closed side and end a little in the round curve): 

 

 

5. Now comes the "weaving" part. Weave the left dotted strip IN the right yellow strip, like this:

 

 

6. Next, the middle yellow strip goes IN the left dotted strip: 

 

 

7. And then, like step 5, the left dotted strip goes IN the (left) yellow strip: 

 

 

8. Next, the right yellow strip goes IN the middle dotted strip and then the middle dotted strip goes IN the middle yellow strip. The left yellow strip goes IN the middle dotted strip again: 

 

 

9. The last strip (dotted) goes IN the right yellow strip:  

 

 

10. The middle yellow strip goes IN the dotted strip: 

 

 

11 And last but not least, the right dotted strip goes IN the left yellow strip: 

 

 

 

12. You've now created the base for your gift bag: 

 

 

13. Cut a strip of paper for the handle of your gift bag (I cut it at approx. 1" x 8") and adhere with two brads (one on the front and one on the back): 

 

 

14. The last step is embellishing your gift bag. I've used some of the fun die-cuts from the Bella! Father mini collection, plus some fabulous Bella! bling and a flower.

As my father loves chocolate chip cookies, I put a large cookie inside:

Hey everyone, it's Caylee. This prompt really got me thinking about what I consider to make my home. I consider my husband to be my home. But when my husband and I were living in an entirely different country last year, I didn't feel quite at home. I mean, I felt safe and secure with my husb and all that, but in the literal sense, I didn't feel home. Then I thought back to how once we started lining up our German bookshelves, our house felt more homey. It was actually kind of obvious all along - our books are where our home is.

 

 

Text reads:

Home is where the bookshelves are. When we moved countries, the only thing we kept in storage were our books. We are minimalists with all our things, except for our shelves-overflowing book collection. Even in Germany, when we knew how few kg of luggage we had, we couldn't help adding to our collection. Getting back to South Africa, opening the boxes and smelling the pages of books... that's how we knew we were truly home.

Featured Product | Oriental Chic with Beckie

Good morning everyone, I hope this finds you in a crafty mood as I have something fun to share with you today.

 

I have really enjoyed working with the Oriental Chic this month.  As previously mentioned I love the blues and reds of this collection and even though they have the Oriental feel with the pretty cherry blossoms and lanterns, I love the touch of vintage that can been seen.

 

And here is what I created ........

 

 

Products Used :  RRBF Oriental Chic

 

I used a mannequin as the base and painted it with cream acrylic paint as it had a lot of patterns on it that didn't co-ordinate with the papers.  Once it had dried I made up the skirt.  This was done by simply wrapping some paper around the body and measuring the size needed.

 

 

I then edged the skirt with some ribbon using some Therm O Web  icrafts adhesive tape (which is fabulous btw)

 

I folded over some lace trim to border the skirt as well.  When this was all done I added it to the mannequin and secured in place.

 

 

To crete the little apron I used one of the notelet journal pieces and snipped around the edges to give it a frilled effect.

 

 

 

Next I decorated the side of the dress with some of the die-cut shapes. 

 

 

 

And because I was so enjoying my time creating I made a matching card .......

Creative Cards with Pattie

 

 

Hi everyone!  Pattie here to share a couple of cards that I created with the beautiful new Oriental Chic range along with a stamp from our swap partner, Some Odd Girl Stamps.

 

 

 

This card was so much fun to create!  The colors in the Oriental Chic range are so rich and warm, yet they are really versatile for everyday use.  I also had a lot of fun coloring!

 

 

 

The embellishments from the Oriental Chic range are awesome as well.  I layered some of them and used some foam adhesive to create dimension.

 

 

 

 

I also created this cute little card.  This beautiful bird embellie is from the Die Cut Pad embellishment pack.  Each pack has multiple designs in the pad and 3 of each design.  I think my favorite part of the pack is one of the sheets from each design is glittered.  Everything is better with glitter!!

Hello Ruby Rock-it Fans!  Alicia here with you today!

You may have noticed that I really like to make off the page projects, and I have them all over my house. People sometimes ask why I make them and what I do with all the things that I make. While some of them are purely decorative, I also really like to make pieces that are functional. I often like to go to the thrift store to pick up (mostly timber) household items that I can repurpose. I once turned a toaster into a photo frame. Sometimes I make things for table centrepieces, or to hold sweet treats. 

 

This month I already made a hanging ribbon cabinet for my daughter. Today I would like to share another project I have made to match. This is to house all of my daughters hair clips. 

 

 

This is a little timber house shaped cabinet I found at the thrift store (like most of my finds). I got this for a bargain $4. It had some pretty ugly bears on it, so I removed those and covered the whole thing in lots of gesso to get a blank canvas. 

 

I made the roof with lots of rows of edge punched paper with some lace trim through the top.

Apart from the sides and roof, the rest of the project was completed using the matching embellishments only. The floral piece is cut from the die cut pad,. The smaller size print was perfect for this project.

Tuesday Tutorial | Silhouette Diecut- Handwriting with Caylee

Hey it's Caylee. One of my favourite things to do with my new Silhouette Portrait is cut out my own handwriting. It really adds a personal touch to projects.

 

Here's how you do it:

Write out your word or phrase on a piece of plain white paper with a thick pen, such as a Sharpie.

If you have a scanner, scan in the image.

If you don't have a scanner, you can just use your smart phone or "big" camera. We don't need the quality to be great, we just need to get it onto the computer.

Drag the image into Photoshop and select each word with the Magic Wand Tool. Make sure to include the tittle (yep, that's what the dot about the i's and j's is called). If it is selecting more than just your text, lower the Tolerance. If it is selecting too little, increase it. To add tittles and other bits to the selection, hold down SHIFT when clicking.

Right click on the selection and choose Layer Via Copy. Repeat the selection process for each word, making sure that you're on the right layer for selection (usually Background).

Change your document size to the same as what you're wanting to print on. This makes it easier to see how it will turn out, especially if you're wanting to use the negative of the text. I turned mine into an A4 size paper

Rearrange your text to the way that you want it by moving each word layer.

Merge the layers once you're happy with the positioning.

Right click on this merged layer, and choose Blending Options.

Under Color Overlay, choose a black overlay at 100% opacity. This makes sure that the lines are better defined.

If you feel like your handwriting was too thin, you can give your text a Stroke. Make sure the Position is set to Outside, the Color is Black, and play around with the size.

Ta-dah. Hide your background layer to make it transparent and save it as a .png file.

Now open up Silhouette Studio. Choose the correct Page Settings.

Drag your saved .png image into the program and align it the way you want. I've aligned mine Center to Page.

Under the Trace tools, choose Select Trace Area and click and drag over your text.

Uncheck High Pass Filter, and play around with the threshold so that all your black text is now yellow and selected. Click Trace.

Click on the black part of your handwriting and delete it. You will be left with your handwriting in white with a red outline.

Choose the appropriate Cut Settings and adjust your blade accordingly. Send it to your Silhouette (eek - excitement !).

Watch as the most beautiful robotic noises and movements come from your Silhouette Cameo / Portrait.

You get a nice little negative of your writing.

As well as your own handwriting... but better.
